  • Automated pipe shoe evaluations for CAESAR II models. This helps users instantly evaluate Process Industry Practices and/or Piping Technology & Products (or equivalent) pipe shoes. Overloaded support locations are identified by their fingerprint in the model and CAESAR II computed loads are checked against allowable loads that are a function of shoe geometry, pipe diameter and wall thickness.

  • Automated flange location and tolerance checks for CAESAR II models. Local pipe system stiffness and “pull-up” calculations are made for each identified flange location based on pipe size and wall thickness. Optimized flange locations throughout the CAESAR II model can be evaluated in a single run.

FEATools improves the quality of CAESAR II users’ analysis for critical service lines by incorporating finite element analysis (FEA) and other empirical sources into the evaluation process. By using CAESAR II in combination with FEATools, analyzed systems are neither over- nor under-designed, but designed with consistent safety factors, which also saves time and money.

Meet the Presenters


     Tony Paulin
     Founder, Paulin Research Group


Tony Paulin has dedicated his life to creating and helping engineers apply the best and most advanced technology to the fields of piping and pressure vessel design and analysis. In 1991 he founded Paulin Research Group (PRG) to develop FEA-based software programs for use in the PV&P sector. Under Tony Paulin’s direction, PRG performs consulting, training, and physical lab testing to confirm both the software’s accuracy and usability. He regularly presents papers and findings at industry seminars and conferences.



     Richard Ay, P.E.
     Vice President of Analysis Solutions, Hexagon PPM


Richard Ay is a registered professional engineer who serves as the vice president for analysis products. In 1985, at the request of Tony Paulin, one of the founders of COADE, Richard joined the company, which later became part of Hexagon PPM. He has worked on the development of CAESAR II, TANK, product licensing, QA, technical support procedures, training, and technical presentations. Richard has previous experience at a major EPC firm and an offshore consulting firm. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Ocean Engineering, a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, and an MBA. Ay is a member of ASCE and ASME.
